The workshop of dreams is about a collaboration between an inspirator, Juan Mari and Elena Arzak, and a designing team, Izaskun Chinchilla Architects. The aim for the designers is to transform an inspirator’s dream into a tangible object.

Juan Mari and Elena Arzak told us that their dream were to continue having fun while creating. The hard work of running a restaurant like Arzak, with a demand of extreme quality, seems to compensate them only if they continue learning through the enjoyment and the challenge. Talking and exploring their creative lab we agreed one of the elements that introduces fun in the kitchen and enable innovation and quality are the instrumental employed by this group of creators. We are talking about all that can be done with a strainer, about objects used for cooking and serving at the same time, syringes, liquid ice…

The dream began to materialize: ‘it would be great while cooking to have at hand all these instruments that make a great dish, waiting to be used again, that its sight suggests you a new step’.

At the begining the dream seemed to became in a big tools cloud allowing the cook to have at any time the needed instrument at hand. But it is about a dream that has to be materialized! Then Elena added a bit of practicity. ‘The horizontal in the kitchen is too busy… the dream only can get the needed space and flexibility by using the vertical’.

To finish the cooking of our shared dream, our team added a new flavour. Wouldn’t be great if the clients could see that “tools cloud” to understand better the process behind each recipe? We started to imagine the clients enjoying and thinking about the function of a mortar and testing carefuly the remains that were still attached.

That’s how we achieve our dream: the window to Arzak’s universe. Our object proposes a window for each of the two main players in theArzak’s space: the cook and the diner. When the cook looks through our window find all that is needed at hand. The storm shutters contain spoons, strainers, tweezers or sieves, the window apron contain pans, bowls and preserved food… and what might seem a haunted climbing plant will aproach the hand blender, mortar and other bigger instruments. The instruments do not hold space on the table and go with the cook.

Meanwhile the diners have its own window. In the shutters the cook has left the instruments so they can explore freely. Some video players let you see how the instruments were used or some of the food nutritional properties. The window apron becomes a table and invite to tasting, in this window the haunted climbing plant provides napkins andpepper shakers that cast a magical and aromatical fragance over the desserts.
